Putra Heights Disaster: Higher Education Students Allowed To Attend Classes Online

Putra Heights: Students from higher learning institutions (IPT) affected by the gas pipeline disaster in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, can attend classes online when the academic session begins tomorrow. Higher Education Director-General Datuk Prof Dr Azlinda Azman announced this measure to ensure students’ education continues uninterrupted despite the recent crisis.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the facility is available to students at public universities, polytechnics, and community colleges. Dr Azlinda emphasized the importance of flexibility in education during such times and assured that all institutions are fully prepared to support the affected students. “I have instructed that classes be held online to allow flexibility at public universities, and all institutions are fully prepared to assist,” she stated during an aid presentation session by Yayasan Perkasa Siswa (YPS) at the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at Masjid Putra Heights.

The catastrophic incident occurred when a fire broke out at the Petronas gas pipeline in Putra Heights at 8.10 am on Tuesday. The blaze produced flames reaching more than 30 meters high and temperatures soaring to 1,000 degrees Celsius. Firefighters battled the inferno for nearly eight hours before it was completely extinguished.

The disaster has left a significant impact on the community, rendering 87 homes uninhabitable. However, after thorough safety checks, another 148 homes were deemed safe for occupancy. The incident resulted in more than 100 injuries and displaced over 300 individuals, highlighting the severity of the situation and the urgent need for recovery and support efforts.
