Shah Alam: Program Tuisyen Rakyat Selangor (PTRS) will undergo enhancements with the addition of biology, physics, and chemistry to its curriculum, as announced by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. This initiative aims to support students preparing for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination by bolstering their performance in Pure Science subjects.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amirudin highlighted the positive impact PTRS has had on student performance in Selangor, as reflected in the improved 2024 SPM results. He emphasized the state’s commitment to strengthening STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, which has yielded favorable outcomes in elective subjects, as shown by the 2024 SPM Subject Average Grade (GPMP). The state plans to further advance the teaching of Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
These remarks were made during the announcement of the 2024 SPM results for Selangor, presented by State Education director Dr Jafri Abu. Established in 2009, PTRS provides additional tuition in subjects such as Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Additional Mathematics, specifically targeting students from low-income families with average or poor academic performance.
PTRS also supports 1,956 teachers and coordinators with allowances and offers free lunches to students from 277 participating schools. Amirudin expressed confidence that the state government’s efforts through PTRS have contributed to improved student achievements and education quality in Selangor, as demonstrated by the State Average Grade (GPN) for the 2024 SPM results. The state recorded a GPN of 4.59, an improvement from 4.67 in the previous year, with 2,368 candidates achieving excellent results in all subjects, compared to 2,005 in 2023.
Amirudin also acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Education and the state government in reducing absenteeism during the SPM. The number of candidates absent from the examination has significantly decreased over the years, with 2,387 in 2022, 1,700 in 2023, and 1,221 in 2024. He assured that the state would continue to monitor absentee candidates and provide them with opportunities to retake the SPM if they wish.
