Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s “The Asian Renaissance” Transcends Time With Italian Translation Launch

Rome: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's influential work, "The Asian Renaissance," continues to engage new audiences as its Italian translation was launched in Rome last week. The book, first published three decades ago, remains significant as it addresses pivotal issues that have persisted and evolved over time.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the book was originally written during a period of rapid transformation in Asia, marked by burgeoning economies, societal modernization, and intense debates on identity, culture, and development. This era of optimism eventually faced challenges such as the Asian financial crisis, the US subprime debacle, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite these changes, "The Asian Renaissance" maintains its relevance, offering insights into contemporary challenges. During the launch event in Rome, a panel of policy practitioners, including senior civil servants and members of Italy's Chamber of Deputies, discussed the book as a living work that continues to address modern dilemmas.

The book's core themes have shifted from the question of whether Asian societies can modernize while maintaining cultural roots to how power, technology, and influence should be wielded in a connected world. These discussions have gained urgency with the rise of Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, and Genomics.

"The Asian Renaissance" advocates for a plural existence, rejecting jingoism and condescension. It draws inspiration from the convivencia of medieval Iberia, where Muslims, Christians, and Jews coexisted productively. The book argues for humility in dialogue and power dynamics, a message reiterated during the Rome launch.

Malaysia's diplomatic stance reflects this ethos, maintaining multiple international relationships without allegiance to a single narrative. This approach aligns with the book's vision of Asia's future as one of moral confidence rooted in pluralism and dignity.

Three decades post-publication, "The Asian Renaissance" remains pertinent as a call for civilizational dialogue amidst global tensions. It advocates for a humane economy that balances growth with social justice and addresses challenges like climate change and technological disruptions, providing a moral and ethical compass for the present and future.
