Kuala lumpur: Datuk Razali Idris' position as the Kijal state assemblyman remains secure, with no automatic vacancy arising, according to Terengganu State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Nor Hamzah.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the issue regarding the Kijal state seat emerged following the Sessions Court's decision to fine Razali RM2,000 after he was found guilty of making inflammatory statements during a speech at the Kemaman By-Election Machinery Launching Ceremony three years ago. The Speaker clarified that a representative can be disqualified if sentenced to imprisonment for more than 12 months or fined over RM2,000. In Razali's case, the fine was exactly RM2,000, thus not triggering disqualification.
BERNAMA also reported that Razali, who serves as the chairman of the Terengganu State Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee, decided to withdraw his appeal against the Sessions Court's ruling. His lawyer, Shahril Nizam Mohd Amin, informed High Court Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid of Razali's decision to retract the notice of appeal, which was filed on January 5. Consequently, the court quashed the notice.
On November 24, 2023, Razali, the former Bersatu information chief, faced charges for allegedly uttering seditious words by claiming that a court case outcome was influenced by the government. The offence reportedly took place at Padang Astaka Chukai, Kemaman, Terengganu, between 9.30 pm and 11.30 pm on November 10, 2023. Under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, the charge carries a maximum sentence of three years' imprisonment or a fine of RM5,000, or both.
