Perlis: The Perlis State Legislative Assembly today approved a motion urging tougher mandatory penalties and stronger enforcement against driving under the influence (DUI) offenders to enhance road safety and prevent avoidable loss of life. Tabling the motion, State Youth and Sports, Communications and Digital, Transport, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Wan Zikri Afthar Ishak said it sought coordinated action between state and federal agencies to strengthen preventive measures and enforcement against drunk driving.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wan Zikri Afthar emphasized that the proposal was not directed at any religion, race, or group, but focused solely on public safety, social justice, and the shared responsibility of all road users. Among the measures proposed were submitting recommendations to the Federal Government, strengthening enforcement at the state level, regulating premises and corporate accountability, expanding youth awareness programs, and enhancing support for victims and their families.

Wan Zikri Afthar stated that road safety was a fundamental right and should not be viewed merely as a legal issue, but as a matter involving human lives. 'This is not merely about punishing offenders but ensuring no more lives are lost due to preventable negligence. Every death caused by a drunk driver reflects a systemic failure that can be addressed through stricter policies and more effective enforcement,' he said.

The assembly also passed the Royal Provisions Enactment (Amendment) Bill 2026. The sitting resumes tomorrow.
