Penang MACC To Call Up More Individuals Over Alleged Zakat-Funded Land Purchase

Penang: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) of Penang will call up more individuals to have their statements recorded to assist in the investigation into the alleged abuse of power involving a senior state government official.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the plans during the Thaipusam celebration at Jalan Kebun Bunga. He stated, "Yes, we will be calling up several other individuals to assist in the case, and I cannot comment any further because we are in the midst of conducting a thorough investigation."

The media had previously reported that the Penang MACC had opened an investigation paper into allegations of abuse of power involving a senior state government official concerning a land purchase funded by zakat (tithe) funds. This probe was reportedly initiated after a state assemblyman highlighted the issue during a legislative assembly session late last year.

The MACC investigation team has visited several offices to obtain relevant documents, which are currently under examination, and has recorded statements from two individuals believed to be connected to the case. The state government has stated that it will allow the MACC to proceed with its investigation without interference. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow affirmed that MACC investigations are ongoing and emphasized that the state government will not conduct an internal probe.
