Penang DOSH Suspends Work After Fatal Accident on Jalan Guar Perahu Indah

Penang: The Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) has issued an immediate stop-work order at a construction site following the death of an Indonesian worker. The worker was tragically crushed by a wall during demolition activities on Jalan Guar Perahu Indah. This halt will remain in place until a comprehensive investigation into the incident is completed.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, DOSH has mandated that several witnesses and representatives from the employer's side present themselves at the DOSH office to aid in further investigations. The incident involved a male worker who was reportedly crushed while performing demolition work during renovation activities.

The accident reportedly took place around 3 pm when the victim, along with other workers, was demolishing a wall in the staircase area of the building. The injuries sustained were severe enough to result in the victim being pronounced dead at the site, as reported in the DOSH statement.

Preliminary findings from the state DOSH indicated that a contractor company had been tasked with the demolition and renovation work. During the incident, workers were using demolition equipment to dismantle the wall, which subsequently collapsed, leading to the fatality.

The DOSH statement highlighted that the ongoing investigation will be conducted under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 [Act 514]. The aim is to uncover the cause of the accident and to determine if there were any breaches of occupational safety and health regulations.

The statement further emphasized the importance of conducting thorough risk assessments before commencing any demolition work. It urged all employers and contractors to implement safe work practices and ensure effective supervision to prevent similar incidents that could result in severe injuries or fatalities.
