Oil And Gas Exploration Study In Sarawak Nears Completion, Says Awang Tengah

Lawas: A comprehensive study to determine the potential of natural gas and naturally occurring hydrogen resources in several areas of Sarawak is expected to be completed by the end of this year, says Sarawak Deputy Premier Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. Awang Tengah, who also serves as Sarawak's Natural Resources and Urban Development Minister II, announced this development during the 39th Irau Aco Lun Bawang festival at Lawas Public Park.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the study is being conducted by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and includes the site where methane gas was discovered in Kampung Datuk, Kuala Lawas, in June. Awang Tengah highlighted that Petros has been licensed to perform oil and gas exploration studies, and the results are anticipated by year-end. "Hopefully, the findings will be positive. We hope there will be stable reserves so that the industry can be developed and become a game changer for the people in this area," he stated.

Awang Tengah, who also represents Bukit Sari, emphasized that the methane gas discovery could become a catalyst for energy industry development in northern Sarawak if the study confirms sufficient reserves. He added that potential gas resources might drive economic growth and create more jobs for locals.

Previously, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg mentioned that the state government, through Petros, would conduct a detailed study to assess the potential of natural gas and naturally occurring hydrogen resources in Gedong, Dalat, and Lawas. Preliminary findings suggest the presence of these resources, but scientific research is needed to confirm the size of the reserves and their commercial viability.

On June 10, the Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Special Team of the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia confirmed the detection of flammable methane gas at the Northern Coastal Highway construction site in Kampung Datuk, Kuala Lawas.
