Kota kinabalu: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has prioritized the enhancement of the national disaster early warning system due to ongoing weather uncertainties caused by the Northeast Monsoon (MTL). The initiative is being led by Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, the minister of NRES, who emphasized its importance in light of forecasts indicating the MTL period may extend until March.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Arthur stated that the improvement of the early warning system is a key focus for the ministry, particularly given the current weather conditions in Sabah. He highlighted the necessity of increasing assets and management efficiency alongside improving forecasting capabilities. This announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Sabah NRES Mini Complex, where Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin was also present.
Arthur elaborated on the importance of accurate forecasting supported by advanced technology and efficient management, especially during the MTL period, to ensure preparedness for potential disasters. He noted that while weather changes cannot be controlled, predicting them allows for early preparation and risk reduction.
On November 14 last year, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) Deputy Director-General (Operations) Ambun Dindang reported that the MTL, which began on November 13, was expected to continue until March this year. The monsoon typically affects Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang initially, before extending to Johor. Sabah and Sarawak could also be impacted, dependent on the monsoon's movement and intensity.
