National Harmony Commission Plan Shelved by Ministry of National Unity

Kuala Lampur:First paragraph of the news story. The Ministry of National Unity has decided not to proceed with the establishment of the National Harmony Commission, following the decision of the National Unity Advisory Council during its inaugural meeting in 2026.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ministry's decision was based on input from two engagement sessions that incorporated feedback from a wide range of participants, including civil society organizations, government agencies, academics, and community leaders. This consultation aimed to evaluate the necessity, scope, and potential impact of the commission, as well as the feasibility and challenges involved in establishing it.

The ministry was responding to an inquiry from Dr. V. Sivakumar regarding the status and timeline for the commission's establishment, its expected enforcement powers, and how it would ensure it did not overlap with the roles of existing agencies tackling discrimination and racial tensions.

Instead, the ministry plans to enhance current institutions such as the Department of National Unity and Integration, neighborhood watch communities, and community mediators. These entities will be the main agencies for promoting social harmony, a strategy viewed as practical, responsive, and cost-effective.

This decision is intended to prevent duplication of functions and the financial burden associated with creating a new entity. Additionally, the ministry can utilize existing frameworks and networks, including the Community Sensitive Issues Reference Centre, the e-Sepakat system, the National Public Community Complaints Network, and its network of unity officers at various administrative levels.
