MOH Reports 596 New TB Cases As Of EW6/2026

Sabah: A total of 596 new tuberculosis (TB) cases were reported nationwide up to Epidemiological Week Six (EW 6/2026), bringing the cumulative number this year to 3,161.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Ministry of Health (MOH) stated that Sabah recorded the highest number of cases at 755, followed by Selangor with 596, Sarawak at 332, Johor with 280, and Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya with a combined total of 244 cases.

The statement further detailed the number of cases in other states: Kedah reported 181 cases, Penang had 172, Perak recorded 154, Kelantan had 121, Pahang reported 103, Terengganu had 74, Negeri Sembilan documented 62, Melaka recorded 48, Perlis had 21, and Labuan reported 18 cases.

MOH emphasized that the Ramadan period is not the cause of TB transmission. However, the increase in social gatherings during the month could lead to closer and more frequent contact among individuals.

The public is advised to practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette, maintain good ventilation in enclosed spaces, wear a face mask if experiencing symptoms or when in crowded places, and seek medical attention if they exhibit a cough lasting more than two weeks or other related symptoms.

The ministry noted that the risk of infection is heightened in crowded, poorly ventilated areas, especially if there is someone with active TB who has not received treatment. The actual risk depends on factors such as the duration of exposure, ventilation, and individual health status.
