Kuala lumpur: A total of 6,416 public electric vehicle (EV) chargers have been installed nationwide as of May 31, 2026, announced the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). The installation includes 2,143 direct current (DC) fast chargers and 4,273 alternating current (AC) chargers.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MITI revealed this information in a written reply published on Parliament's website. The ministry addressed the current shortage of chargers and outlined measures taken to increase the number of charging facilities across the country. The government has strengthened the Whole-of-Government approach, implementing EV Charging Bay Planning Guidelines by PLANMalaysia, which significantly reduces the approval process to just 14 working days.
The ministry emphasized ongoing collaboration with local authorities, the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, charging point operators, the EV Charging Industry Association, and the Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association. These efforts aim to expand EV adoption in Malaysia, focusing on vehicle affordability, charging infrastructure readiness, and the development of the local EV ecosystem to support the nation's low-carbon mobility goals and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Additionally, MITI highlighted the government's focus on strengthening the domestic value chain through collaborations with local companies, original equipment manufacturers, and global technology providers. This strategy aims to accelerate technology transfer and enhance the production of high-value components like batteries, electric drive motors, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
Under the National EV Project, led by Perodua as part of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, 62 local supplier companies and over 300 Malaysian automotive engineers and specialists have contributed to the development of the national EV. Concurrently, the Proton EV project is set to involve 40 local companies in its supply chain, boosting local vendors' capabilities in manufacturing EV components and integrating Malaysian firms into the global EV supply chain.
