Military-Run ‘Lemang Tok Singa’ A Ramadan Hit, Sells Out Daily

Seberang takir: The Lemang Tok Singa stall, operated by personnel from the Royal Malay Regiment (18 RAMD) (Para) 18th Battalion at Seri Pantai Camp, has become a major attraction throughout Ramadan. Each day, 100 sticks of lemang sell out in approximately 20 minutes, not including advance orders placed by eager customers.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, 18 RAMD (Para) Commanding Officer Lt Col Mohd Ashafiq Abdul Aziz stated that the overwhelming response from the public was unexpected. Initially, they prepared 50 sticks of lemang as a trial, but due to the high demand, production was increased to 250 sticks per day. Despite the increase, the lemang continues to sell out quickly, leaving many customers disappointed.

Lt Col Mohd Ashafiq emphasized that the primary purpose of selling lemang is to engage with the local community, in line with the sixth pillar of the 24th Chief of Defence Force's command directive, which focuses on mutual dependence, as well as the 31st Chief of Army's directive promoting unity and pride. The initiative also caters to locals craving freshly cooked lemang, a dish not readily available around Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus. Customers are drawn not only from Terengganu but also from Kelantan and Pahang, and the stall shares daily live broadcasts on Facebook to reach a wider audience.

The uniqueness of Lemang Tok Singa, named after the unit's identity, lies in its use of daun lerek, which enhances its aroma and taste, and the use of thick, fresh coconut milk that gives it a softer texture. Around 20 off-duty personnel are involved in the preparation process, which starts at 9 am. Supplies such as bamboo and daun lerek are sourced in bulk from Kelantan to lower costs. Each large-sized lemang is priced at RM20, with 10 sticks prepared daily for donation to senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.

For Aidilfitri, the team can only fulfill orders for up to 600 sticks of lemang due to constraints, but sales will continue from the second to the seventh day of Hari Raya to allow more people to enjoy Lemang Tok Singa.
