Kioxia Unveils Super High IOPS SSD for AI and High-Performance Computing

Tokyo: Kioxia Corporation has announced the development of its Super High IOPS SSD, a novel solid-state drive designed to enhance AI GPU-initiated workloads. The KIOXIA GP Series allows GPUs to directly access high-speed flash memory, acting as an extension to High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) in AI systems. This innovation is intended to address the increasing performance requirements of AI and high-performance computing by providing expanded GPU-accessible memory capacity, thereby enabling quicker data retrieval for AI applications. The company plans to distribute evaluation samples of the KIOXIA GP Series to select customers by the end of 2026.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this development aligns with the NVIDIA Storage-Next initiative, which responds to the projected transition from compute-intensive to data-intensive workloads. The initiative seeks to expand the GPU's accessible memory capacity, which is currently constrained by HBM limitations. By increasing the GPU's usable memory space, the initiative allows for the handling of larger data sets and improves GPU efficiency by positioning more data in proximity to compute resources.
