MD2 Pineapple Exports To New Zealand Set To Generate RM4.3 Million Annually

Kuala lumpur: Exports of Malaysia's fresh MD2 pineapple variety to New Zealand are expected to generate about RM4.3 million annually, opening a new market for the country's pineapple industry. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that this achievement was the result of collaboration between the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM), Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW), industry players, and other stakeholders. This initiative follows the MD2 pineapple cultivation on over 121.4 hectares in Lanchang, Pahang.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad emphasized the wide-open export market for Malaysian pineapples, known for their quality. The shipment to New Zealand is expected to generate significant annual revenue, with hopes of expanding exports to other countries in the future. The announcement came during the MD2 pineapple export launch ceremony to New Zealand, also attended by KPKM secretary-general Datuk Seri Isham Ishak.

Mohamad highlighted New Zealand as a new market for Malaysian pineapples, traditionally exported to Asian countries. This move also opens access to the Pacific region, including Australia. He stressed the importance of strengthening agricultural exports to narrow the country's food trade gap, as Malaysia imports significantly more than it exports, with figures surpassing RM80 billion.

The minister pointed out that pineapple exports to New Zealand benefit from the Malaysia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (MNZFTA), including tariff exemptions that enhance the competitiveness of local products. This follows a statement made by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on July 18, indicating New Zealand's request for increased pineapple exports due to strong demand.

Regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz amid the Middle East conflict, Mohamad reassured that the country's food supply remains stable and is expected to be sufficient until at least December. He mentioned that early announcements would be made to the public if any sudden changes occur.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Pineapple Exporters Association (MAPEA) representative Wesley Tan Seah Ging shared that the inaugural shipment involves 22.5 tonnes of MD2 pineapples, or 1,500 boxes, set to depart tomorrow and arrive at the Port of Auckland on July 13 for local distribution. Wesley, also managing director of Aqina Fruits Sdn Bhd, stated that this export reflects a joint producer development programme with FELDA at the Permanent Food Production Park in Lanchang, showcasing the capability of local producers to supply high-quality fruit for export markets.
