Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently investigating an online report by China Press, which is alleged to have misinterpreted a royal statement made by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, during the opening of the Parliament's new session, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the investigation is carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. This section addresses the misuse of network facilities or services that could potentially cause confusion, public anxiety, or disrupt public harmony. The investigation was initiated following an official complaint filed by a member of the public.
Fahmi stated that if any party files a police report, it will be addressed separately and managed entirely by the Royal Malaysia Police in accordance with existing legal provisions. He highlighted the role of the Malaysian Media Council, encouraging it to uphold media standards and accountability.
Fahmi emphasized the importance of ensuring compliance with journalistic ethics, promoting responsible and accurate reporting, and serving as a self-regulatory platform to professionally and ethically handle complaints and media-related issues.
He advised the public against making excessive or defamatory comments, particularly on social media, and underscored the importance of respecting the monarchy while allowing the legal process to unfold. Reports indicate that the translation error in the royal address pertained to the Malay language.
