MCMC Investigates Alleged AI Manipulation of Tun Mahathir Grieving Video

Kuala Lumpur:The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is focusing on social media content that allegedly uses artificial intelligence to alter footage of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad grieving the loss of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the MCMC has reached out to the relevant social media platforms regarding this content. The commission has indicated that violations of law could lead to actions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The MCMC emphasized the seriousness of manipulating genuine footage, especially when it misleads the public or undermines the dignity of individuals during times of bereavement. They urged the public to refrain from creating or sharing misleading content and encouraged verification before dissemination.

The public is also advised to report suspected manipulated content to the appropriate platforms or authorities. While acknowledging the benefits of AI, the MCMC highlighted the importance of using technology responsibly and not exploiting someone's grief.

This statement follows the circulation of altered footage of Tun Dr Mahathir after his wife's passing on September 28 at the age of 100. In March, the government noted the growing use of AI and deepfake technology to create false content and stated that MCMC is collaborating with social media platforms and enforcement agencies to tackle harmful online content.
