Max Verstappen Wins Bahrain GP Amidst Rainy Drama in Sepang

Sepang:The Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, held from October 2-4, 2026, turned out to be a thrilling spectacle at the Sepang International Circuit, attracting a record-breaking 261,000 spectators over the weekend. After a nine-year hiatus, the event showcased Sepang's capability to host an F1 race once again.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the atmosphere was electric with fans from Malaysia and around the world filling the grandstands. The national anthem, Negaraku, resonated with a special significance, stirring a thunderous cheer across the circuit.

The race day witnessed a dramatic weather shift as heavy rain delayed the start, soaking fans and creating challenging conditions. Notably, even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was seen braving the rain. Despite the 93-minute delay, fans remained enthusiastic, engaging in a Mexican wave and cheering for their favorite drivers on the big screens.

Amidst the wet conditions, several cars, including those of Lewis Hamilton and Esteban Ocon, faced power issues during the formation lap. The race, once underway, lived up to Sepang's reputation for unpredictability with changing track grip and strategic tyre decisions.

Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen claimed victory, marking his 72nd career win and first of the season at the circuit where he last triumphed in 2017. Lewis Hamilton, despite dropping to 17th due to a tyre choice error, made a remarkable recovery to finish third.

Off the track, the event also served as a cultural exchange, with Bahraini heritage and hospitality on display. The event highlighted the potential economic benefits of hosting F1, estimated to generate over RM1 billion for Malaysia.

The successful return of F1 to Sepang has reignited discussions on its future in Malaysia. Options such as a shorter arrangement or a Southeast Asian rotation with Singapore and Thailand are being considered to share the financial and organizational responsibilities while maintaining F1's presence in the region.

Sepang demonstrated its prowess as a world-class circuit, leaving fans and drivers alike with unforgettable memories, and reiterating the potential of F1 as a platform for tourism and international exposure for Malaysia.
