Malaysia Aquatics Maintains Current Coaching Staff Despite 2026 Asian Games Results

Kuala Lampur:Malaysia Aquatics says there is no need to revamp the national swimming team coaching lineup despite the swimmers' lacklustre performance in the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, which ended on October 4.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MAS secretary-general Andy Low stated that the existing coaches, including head coach Michael Kinross, appointed in May, have shown positive developments, even though the national swimmers returned without medals from the Games.

No specific targets were set for the swimming team at the 2026 Asiad, but at least one national record was broken. Low emphasized the importance of stability in coaching, noting that frequent changes could confuse swimmers and jeopardize their plans. This statement followed the national swimming squad's post-Asiad 2026 evaluation meeting, attended by MAS president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.

The national swimming coaching lineup also includes Denmark's Magnus Hojby Andersen and technical director Megan Oesting from the United States. Low mentioned that the meeting did not address whether to retain or drop existing national swimmers.

At the 2026 Asian Games, the team of Khiew Hoe Yean, Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal, Lim Yin Chuen, and Tan Khai Zin set a new national 4x200-metre men's freestyle record with a time of 7 minutes and 18.79 seconds, finishing fifth in the final. This time surpassed their previous national record of 7:19.50 set at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.

Malaysia's last Asian Games swimming medal was won by Alex Lim Keng Liat, who secured a silver in the men's 100m backstroke at the 2022 edition in Busan, South Korea.
