Malaysia’s Balanced Diplomacy Connects Economic Blocs, Says PM Anwar

Bangkok: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia’s balanced diplomatic approach, fostering strong relations with both the United States and China, has effectively positioned the nation as a pivotal bridge connecting various economic blocs in the region.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this strategic stance is supported by regional cooperation through ASEAN and initiatives like the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). It is considered particularly timely in the face of a global trade environment that is increasingly fragmented and uncertain, as highlighted by the prime minister in a statement made during his current working visit to the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM).

Upon his arrival for the visit, Anwar received the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) 2025 Annual Report from ABAC Malaysia Chair Datuk Ruben Emir Gnanalingam. He emphasized the significance of the report as a crucial input for policy discussions at the AELM, focusing on advancing agendas related to people’s well-being, economic justice, and equitable regional development.

Anwar noted, “This report gathers the views and aspirations of the business community across Asia-Pacific economies for APEC Economic Leaders, aiming to strengthen inclusive and sustainable growth, enhance business competitiveness, and ensure prosperity benefits all societal levels.” He further remarked that the report’s advocacy for open, rules-based trade aligns with Malaysia’s neutral and pragmatic policy engagement.

The prime minister’s three-day working visit includes delivering Malaysia’s official statement at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Dialogue with Guests. His address will emphasize the importance of inclusivity in strengthening supply chains, developing the digital economy, and fostering regional cooperation for sustainable development.

In addition to his official duties at AELM, Anwar is slated to engage in bilateral meetings with several APEC economic representatives. His agenda also includes meetings with potential investors, featuring discussions with Namhae Chemical Corp, JS Link, Nvidia, and YTL Power representatives.

The prime minister’s day will conclude with attending the APEC Economic Leaders dinner, followed by a press conference to address the outcomes and future directions of Malaysia’s involvement in regional economic initiatives.
