Kuala lumpur: Malaysia's successful organization of the ASEAN-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, which included bringing together world leaders for a series of high-level summits, has attracted global attention, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He noted that Malaysia not only managed strong logistical execution but also recorded significant achievements during its tenure as the ASEAN Chair, all while navigating an uncertain global geopolitical landscape.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 despite challenges arising from global geopolitical uncertainties. The country successfully brought together world leaders, organizing key platforms such as the ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-GCC-China meetings. Malaysia also hosted the 46th ASEAN Summit and subsequently the 47th Summit, achievements that have received worldwide attention.
Mohamad spoke at the ASEAN-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025 appreciation ceremony, which was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. He highlighted that Malaysia continues to enjoy strong trust within ASEAN, as demonstrated by its selection as the permanent shepherd for the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, a role to be held for the next 20 years. This trust was further reflected when Malaysia was approached to help resolve a border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.
Mohamad expressed appreciation to all parties involved in ensuring the success of the ASEAN-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, including both public and private sectors. He emphasized Malaysia's capability to manage the arrival and participation of leaders from around the world at the highest level.
In October of the previous year, Malaysia officially handed over the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines, marking the transition of leadership as Malaysia entered the final phase of its 2025 chairmanship. Since taking over the chair from Laos, Malaysia has focused on strengthening unity, inclusiveness, and sustainability within the region. Two major milestones highlighted the success of its chairmanship: the admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN's 11th member state and the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.
Since ASEAN's establishment in 1967, this was the fifth time Malaysia assumed the chairmanship, following previous tenures in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
