Bangkok: The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) celebrated a significant triumph as the national track cycling team clinched four gold medals and one silver at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MNCF president Datuk Amarjit Singh expressed immense pride in the team's accomplishment, which surpassed the initial goal of two gold medals. He highlighted the victory as evidence of the team's capabilities and potential within the region. Amarjit extended his gratitude to the athletes, coaches, the National Sports Council (MSN), and the National Sports Institute (ISN) for their unwavering support during the preparation and competition phases of the biennial sports event.
The track cycling team displayed remarkable prowess by securing victories in four out of the five gold-medal events. Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom led the charge with a win in the men's keirin event, while Nur Aisyah Zubir triumphed in the women's scratch race. The men's team sprint event saw success from the trio of Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis, Mohamad Akmal Nazimi Jusena, and Muhammad Ridwan. Additionally, the men's team pursuit event was won by the quartet of Azim Aliyas, Hafiq Jafri, Yusri Shaari, and New Joe Lau. Joe Lau also added a silver medal to the tally in the men's point race.
Looking ahead to the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia, Amarjit revealed plans to expand the track cycling events, leveraging the country's velodrome facilities. Preliminary discussions with the Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) are set to begin, focusing on venue selection and event planning. He emphasized the need to start preparations early to maintain the momentum and success demonstrated in the current games.
Reflecting on past achievements, Amarjit noted that Malaysia had previously excelled in the 2017 edition, dominating 11 out of 13 track cycling events. This history of success, led by world-class cyclists such as Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, sets a precedent for future aspirations in the sport.
