Malaysian Film Pioneer L. Krishnan Passes Away at 104

Chiang Mai:According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his condolences following the death of Tan Sri L. Krishnan, a pioneering figure in the Malaysian film industry, who passed away at the age of 104.

Anwar described Krishnan's passing as a significant loss to Malaysia's arts and culture sector, particularly the Malay film industry. He highlighted Krishnan's role in shaping the development of Malay cinema, noting his contributions as a director with companies like Shaw Brothers, Malay Film Productions, Cathay-Keris, and Merdeka Studios during the 1950s and 1960s. Among Krishnan's notable works are films such as "Bakti," "Keris Sempena Riau," and "Selendang Merah."

Krishnan is also remembered for nurturing the talents of prominent stars including the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee, Maria Menado, Mustapha Maarof, M. Amin, and Rosnani Jamil. Anwar acknowledged Krishnan's extensive career, which spanned over six decades in film, advertising, and music, leaving a lasting legacy in Malaysia's arts and culture.

The Prime Minister extended his condolences to Krishnan's family, offering prayers for their strength during this difficult time. Krishnan, a recipient of the 2016 Merdeka Award, reportedly died in Chiang Mai, Thailand, due to old age.
