Kuala Lumpur:Malaysia and Russia are set to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen bilateral ties through enhanced cooperation in culture and the arts.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing stated that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) delegation engaged in discussions with Russian Cultural Minister Olga Borisovna Lyubimova during the St. Petersburg International United Cultures Forum. Tiong expressed Malaysia's appreciation for Russia's continued engagement, including the Russian Cinema Week held in conjunction with the 9th Malaysian International Film Festival.
In May, students from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory performed as part of the "Rising Stars" cultural project during their tour to Malaysia. Tiong noted that such initiatives, along with opportunities for Malaysian students to study in Russia, have contributed to greater understanding and closer ties between the two countries.
Malaysia looks forward to concluding a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cultural Cooperation, following Malaysia's counterproposal submitted in August 2026. The MoU is expected to provide a framework for closer collaboration among cultural institutions, practitioners, and entrepreneurs through cultural showcases, professional exchanges, student engagement, and partnerships in cultural tourism and the creative economy.
Tiong also emphasized Malaysia's willingness to offer further opportunities for Russian students to experience Malaysia's rich cultural heritage. He highlighted that sustained cooperation in culture and arts would deepen mutual understanding and contribute to a stronger Malaysia-Russia partnership. By exchanging ideas, talents, and traditions, both nations aim to create a platform for innovation and shared growth, fostering lasting friendship and prosperity.
