Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysia will not entertain any pardon application involving fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low. The Prime Minister emphasized that the issue is currently insignificant for the Malaysian Government as legal proceedings involving Low are ongoing.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar clarified the government's stance after officiating the 2026 National Youth Day (HBN) celebration. He stated, "It's a non-issue. We are not going to consider that. No," when questioned by reporters. Furthermore, Anwar affirmed that the Malaysian Government would not formally oppose any potential decision by the United States regarding the matter, adding, "As far as we are concerned, we are not going that route...but of course, what the US decides is their own business."
Anwar also mentioned his unawareness of any pardon application submitted by Jho Low, reiterating that the matter does not warrant discussion due to ongoing court proceedings. He stated, "We have made it very clear, it's a non-issue. Even if he has submitted an application (for pardon), it's not an issue that we should discuss because he is still undergoing this process in court."
Two days prior, foreign media reported allegations that Jho Low had filed a pardon application to US President Donald Trump weeks ago. The report claimed that approval of this application would result in the dismissal of US criminal charges against Low. Additionally, the US Department of Justice website allegedly listed an application under the name Taek Jho Low as 'pending' for a 'Pardon after Completion of Sentence'.
The businessman, charged in 2018 with the misappropriation of approximately USD4.5 billion (RM17.7 billion) from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds, remains at large and is wanted by authorities.
