Malaysia Surpasses Forest Conservation Goals with 54% Land Coverage

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia continues to uphold its commitment to sustainable forestry by maintaining 54 percent of its total land area under forest cover, exceeding its pledge to preserve at least half of its landmass as forest reserves. This was confirmed by Plantations and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who emphasized the nation’s dedication to balancing economic growth with environmental protection through sustainable forest management.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Johari stated that Malaysia’s commitment to forest preservation is evident in its achievement of maintaining over 50 percent forest cover. Speaking to reporters at the Malaysian Wood Expo (MWE) 2025, he highlighted the country’s dedication to responsible forest management, ensuring the timber sector’s growth aligns with sustainability principles.

Johari stressed the importance of creativity, quality craftsmanship, and sustainability in the wood industry to remain competitive. These elements form a strategy for exporting Malaysian wood products internationally. He underscored that the Industrial Tree Plantation (ITP) programme is critical for providing a long-term, renewable raw material supply for Malaysia’s timber industry, reducing reliance on natural forests.

As of October 2025, Malaysia has certified 5.85 million hectares of its forests under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), placing it among the top 10 countries globally with the largest PEFC-certified forest area. Johari affirmed Malaysia’s readiness to serve as a reliable gateway to the ASEAN timber market, backed by strong trade links, a credible certification system, and a reputation for sustainability.
