Malaysia Strategizes for 2027 SEA Games Success

Kuala Lumpur:Malaysia does not see its performance behind Thailand in the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games as indicative of its potential at the 2027 SEA Games. Instead, the country believes that strategic event selection and leveraging strengths in certain sports could be crucial for securing the overall title.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, National Sports Council director-general Jefri Ngadirin highlighted that the competition level at the SEA Games differs from the Asiad, particularly in the events contested and the opportunities to win gold medals. Jefri emphasized that the sports announced for the SEA Games can contribute differently to Malaysia's gold medal tally compared to the Asiad.

The approach for the SEA Games has been a focus of early preparations, with national sports associations being encouraged to prioritize the country's interests in event selection. Jefri stated that their strategy aims to ensure Malaysia emerges as overall champions, with a focus on selecting the right types of events to maximize gold medal wins.

Despite Thailand's strong performance in Aichi-Nagoya, finishing seventh with 18 golds, Malaysia does not view this as a predictor of SEA Games outcomes, where they finished 11th with 9 golds. Jefri acknowledged Thailand's strengths in traditional sports but noted Malaysia's intention to focus on its own strengths, like sepak takraw, which has shown significant international progress.

Malaysia is set to host the 2027 SEA Games and is determined to capture the overall title for the first time since the 2017 Kuala Lumpur edition.
