Malaysia Ends 36-Year Wait for Asian Games Gold in Sepak Takraw

Aichi-Nagoya:Malaysia's national sepak takraw team achieved a historic victory by winning the men's team regu gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. This triumph ended a 36-year wait for Malaysia in this category, marking a significant moment for national player Amirul Zazwan Amir.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amirul Zazwan, known as Ayong, expressed that winning the gold medal was the pinnacle of his career and an invaluable achievement. He believes this success will inspire him to maintain his performance and contribute to future victories for Malaysia.

The Malaysian team, known as the Golden Tigers, secured the gold medal by defeating Thailand 2-0 in a captivating match at the Poloma Mizuho Arena. The last time Malaysia won the gold in this event was in 1990 in Beijing, where they also overcame their traditional rivals, Thailand.

Amirul Zazwan attributed the team's success to the players' understanding of each other's roles and the effective tactical strategies implemented by the coach. He emphasized that the long-standing familiarity among team members played a crucial role in their victory.

This season, Amirul has joined Perak Bison, the defending champions of the Sepak Takraw League (STL), after leaving Kuala Lumpur Thunder. He aims to leverage his experience to deliver strong performances and help Perak Bison retain their title.
