Shanghai:Malaysia is positioning Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at the forefront of its industrial policy to drive economic transformation by developing a highly skilled and well-paid workforce.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that this strategy is a core element in Malaysia's transition to a high-growth, high-value economy, as the nation expands into sectors such as chip design, artificial intelligence (AI), green technology, and agri-food.
The 'TVET 2.0' reform phase is designed to foster closer collaboration between industry players and training institutions, enhancing exposure to emerging fields like semiconductors, AI, and renewable energy. The National TVET Council oversees this national agenda through approximately 1,400 institutions involving 12 ministries, state governments, and private providers under the National TVET Policy 2030.
During his keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference 2026, Anwar stressed the importance of industry collaboration in developing talent to ensure Malaysia stays competitive in advanced sectors. He stated that a modern economy relies on skilled technicians to manage sophisticated machinery and software.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang inaugurated the three-day conference, themed 'Shaping a Skills-Driven Future,' at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC). The event coincides with the 48th WorldSkills Competition Shanghai 2026 and WorldSkills Expo, attracting global policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to discuss strengthening TVET systems worldwide.
Anwar highlighted Malaysia's ambition to secure RM500 billion in semiconductor investments and to train or upskill 60,000 highly skilled Malaysian engineers by 2030. He acknowledged Shanghai's transformation into a hub for semiconductors and AI and expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended to the Malaysian delegation.
The prime minister also spoke about enhancing TVET cooperation with China, leveraging its advancements in manufacturing, AI, robotics, and digital technologies. He noted existing initiatives like the Malaysia-China Youth TVET Training, which exemplify successful collaboration, and expressed confidence in TVET becoming a central pillar of Malaysia-China relations.
