Kampung Melayu Majidee:The adoption of unmanned store concepts by micro-entrepreneurs is proving to be an effective strategy for reducing operating costs by utilizing compact retail spaces, cashless payment systems, and CCTV monitoring.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, a used clothing shop in Kampung Melayu Majidee has implemented this model in a 10x10 foot space without an on-site attendant. Proprietor Mohd Idham Zamzuri stated that the self-service approach minimizes costs by reducing space usage and enabling customers to select and pay for items using QR codes.

Three CCTV cameras are installed to oversee the store's operations, and all items have price tags and product information to assist customers. Mohd Idham was inspired by Japan's unmanned stores and implemented the concept on a small scale with an initial setup capital of around RM8,000, which included self-conducted renovations.

Approximately 80% of the store's inventory is priced under RM100, with combo deals such as two items for RM50 or three for RM100 to encourage turnover and mitigate loss risks. Mohd Idham commutes from Pasir Gudang to Majidee, checking and restocking the shop twice weekly.

Reflecting on his business journey, Mohd Idham began in 2013 at age 19 with RM300 from selling pre-owned goods, expanding to physical and online sales before establishing the self-service store last May.

Customer Ghazali Md Rawi praised the concept for its practicality, allowing customers to access product information and complete transactions independently, suggesting its potential application in other sectors to reduce costs without sacrificing customer comfort.
