Kuala lumpur: Bilateral ties between Malaysia and India have reached a historic pinnacle, driven by renewed momentum in economic cooperation and a strong personal rapport between the two heads of government. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his enthusiasm and gratitude for the visit by his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, noting a significant strengthening of the bond between the two nations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar described Modi as a "great friend" and emphasized the close personal bond they share, which has played a crucial role in turning diplomatic intentions into tangible outcomes. He highlighted that the strengthened relationship is not merely declarative but has yielded concrete results, with bilateral trade reaching nearly US$19 billion in 2025, positioning India as one of Malaysia's top trading partners.
In his keynote address at an event organized by the Indian community in Malaysia at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC), Anwar underscored the importance of Modi's visit, especially as Malaysia gears up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026). The event also saw the presence of Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and senior government officials.
Anwar paid tribute to the Malaysian Indian community, acknowledging their critical role in the country's development. He remarked on their integral contribution to nation-building, alongside Malay and Chinese communities, and highlighted cultural influences such as 'Little India' districts and shared celebrations like Deepavali.
Modi's two-day official visit to Malaysia, at Anwar's invitation, reciprocates the Malaysian leader's visit to India in August 2024. The visit underscores the importance of the relationship, with India continuing to be Malaysia's largest trading partner in the South Asian region. The total trade between the two countries reached RM79.49 billion (US$18.59 billion) in 2025.
