Malaysia and Bangladesh Strengthen ASEAN Cooperation to Address Rohingya Refugee Crisis

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and Bangladesh will enhance their collaboration through ASEAN mechanisms to seek a permanent solution for the Rohingya refugee crisis, including engagement with Myanmar's authorities, stated Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister emphasized that both countries are committed to addressing the challenges faced by Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted the intention of both countries to utilize their foreign ministers and ASEAN platforms to initiate discussions with Myanmar's authorities. This cooperative approach aims to alleviate the plight of the refugees. Anwar expressed these sentiments during a joint press conference with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Tarique Rahman voiced his concern over the humanitarian issues affecting the Rohingya people in Bangladesh and expressed gratitude towards Malaysia for its ongoing support in ensuring the refugees' safe, dignified, and sustainable return to Myanmar. He also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation on various issues.

Earlier discussions between Anwar and Tarique focused on the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, exploring further opportunities in trade and investment, human resource management, semiconductors, energy, agriculture, and education. They also exchanged views on regional and international matters of shared interest.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation, alongside two Exchanges of Notes on Counter-Terrorism Research and Investment Promotion and Facilitation. Tarique's visit marks his first bilateral official engagement abroad since taking office in February 2026, following an invitation from Anwar.

In 2025, trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh totaled RM12.18 billion (USD2.84 billion), with Malaysian exports primarily consisting of petroleum products. Imports from Bangladesh largely comprised textiles, apparel, and footwear. Notably, Bangladesh was Malaysia's 28th largest trading partner globally in 2025 and its second largest in the South Asia region, following India.
