Calicut: Malaysia has emphasized that its involvement in the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit is focused on advocating for a more equitable international system rather than opposing any existing international blocs. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim underscored Malaysia's commitment to maintaining strong relations with the United States, European Union (EU), Australia, and other global partners while calling for reforms in the current international framework.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that BRICS and ASEAN are not designed to counter other groups. Instead, Malaysia aims to establish fair rules and update outdated systems. He criticized the current structure agreed upon in 1945, labeling it as obsolete, unfair, and undemocratic, during a media conference in Calicut with Malaysian media before concluding his working visit to India.
Anwar further asserted the importance of maintaining robust bilateral ties with the US, while ensuring that Malaysia can voice critical views essential for the nation, the region, and the world. He pointed out that the international systems, including institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, require reassessment to better align with present-day needs and realities.
Additionally, Anwar expressed Malaysia's support for reducing dependence on the US dollar in trade, advocating for transactions using local currencies between countries. Discussing full BRICS membership, he noted the existing moratorium, yet affirmed Malaysia's active participation in BRICS activities as a partner country.
The Prime Minister mentioned that Malaysia has garnered support to become a BRICS partner country and intends to seize opportunities to bolster economic and trade collaborations. Despite the moratorium on full membership, Malaysia is actively engaged in BRICS activities, having been accepted as a partner country since January 1, 2025.
Anwar attended the BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he delivered a National Statement on Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.
