Lookout Pleads Not Guilty to Multiple Bribery Charges in Sessions Court

Kuala Lampur:A 'tonto', or lookout, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court to 55 charges of bribing traffic police officers with RM62,900 between January 2022 and February 2026.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ang Lie Giap, aged 33, faced the charges before Judge Datuk Mohd Nasir Nordin. Ang is accused of bribing officers from the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters, Negeri Sembilan Contingent Police Headquarters, and the Kesas Expressway EMPV Patrol Office to avoid lorry inspections during roadblocks. The alleged bribes were made through several transactions at bank branches in Klang and Setia Alam, with amounts ranging from RM700 to RM2,000.

In a related case, logistics manager R Yuvarajakumar, 42, also pleaded not guilty to 16 charges of bribing a Road Transport Department enforcement assistant with RM4,200 between May 2023 and October 2024. These transactions were allegedly made to a woman's account at a bank in Sungai Buloh to prevent lorry inspections.

Both cases fall under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of at least five times the bribe's value or RM10,000. Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmaa' Zamri led the prosecution, proposing a bail of RM15,000 for Ang and RM10,000 for Yuvarajakumar, with conditions including monthly reporting to the MACC, surrendering passports, and non-interference with witnesses.

Ang's lawyer, K Theivaendran, requested a bail reduction to RM10,000 and for Ang's passport not to be surrendered, citing his need to travel for religious reasons and his wife's impending childbirth. Yuvarajakumar's lawyer, Datuk Dr Aswandi Mohamed Hashim, sought a reduction to RM5,000, noting it was his client's first offence and his role as a caregiver for his asthmatic mother.

The court granted bail at RM15,000 for Ang and RM5,000 for Yuvarajakumar with conditions. Yuvarajakumar must surrender his passport. The next court mention is set for December 3.
