Labuan international school: Labuan International School (LIS) has made its mark on the international stage after its nine-year-old student Keeona Mark Phillips secured second place at the JOEY - The Young Kangaroo International English Competition Global Finals in Istanbul, Turkiye.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, LIS principal Fadlin Aimuni stated that Keeona's achievement was not only a proud moment for the school but also for Malaysia, as she was among only 14 participants representing the country at the Global Finals. "This achievement is a great source of pride for LIS and also for Malaysia. Keeona has shown that with confidence, dedication and determination, our young students are capable of competing and excelling on the global stage," she expressed.

Keeona, who competed in the Pre A1, Grade 3 category, also received the 'Joey of the Year' Award for being the most active participant throughout the competition held from September 1 to 6. The Global Finals brought together 300 participants from 34 countries. It was Keeona's first participation in JOEY, making her achievement of second place and the 'Joey of the Year' Award a notable debut at the international competition.

JOEY is an international English competition that provides young learners with a platform to demonstrate their English proficiency, confidence and communication skills across various categories. Fadlin noted that Keeona's success also reflected the school's efforts to nurture students who are confident, capable and ready to take on opportunities beyond the classroom. She also acknowledged the strong support of Keeona's parents, Mark Phillips and Cecilia, whose encouragement had played an important role in building their daughter's confidence to embrace the international challenge.
