Kota bharu: Licensed gold panners in Kelantan will be authorized to commence their activities starting January 21, as announced by Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Land and Mines Office has received 332 licence applications, with 179 applicants having completed payment and obtained their licences. The remaining applications are still under review.
Dr. Mohamed Fadzli stated that the state government will start land demarcation to officially designate approved areas for gold panning, with the initial phase covering a two-kilometer stretch. Follow-up studies will be undertaken to ensure the smooth operation of the panning process, with plans to expand the designated areas if everything proceeds as expected.
The rivers earmarked for the first phase include Sungai Taduh and Sungai Pergau in Jeli, Sungai Gentian in Kuala Krai, Sungai Galas in Gua Musang, and Sungai Bertam in Tanah Merah. These areas will be clearly marked for licensed panners, aiding in monitoring and enforcement by the authorities. Dr. Mohamed Fadzli emphasized the importance of adherence to application conditions, noting that unlicensed gold panning will be treated as an offense.
He also mentioned that two authorized gold-buying companies have been appointed, with additional applicants under consideration. The mineral resource will be sold to a state subsidiary.
In a related development, Kelantan is open to foreign investors exploring non-radioactive rare earth elements (NR-REE), with Lynas Rare Earths Ltd having signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kelantan government through MB Inc in May 2025 for the development of REE resources. Several other foreign companies have expressed interest, and the state is evaluating these proposals to select those offering the best terms.
