Langkawi Calls for Targeted Economic Measures in Budget 2027

Langkawi:The federal government is being urged to focus on Langkawi in Budget 2027, with calls for specific measures to invigorate the island's tourism sector and support the incomes of tourism operators as well as small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the chairman of the non-governmental organisation Anak Muda MADANI Kedah, Datuk Zuraidi Rahim, emphasized the need for an economic boost to revive Langkawi's activities, which heavily depend on tourism.

A key issue highlighted is the full restoration of Langkawi's status as a duty-free zone, previously a major draw for tourists. Zuraidi expressed his hope for federal intervention in Budget 2027 to address the duty-free facilities and encourage tourist arrivals, noting the sector's significant impact on the local economy.

He also mentioned the broader effects of tourism recovery, which would benefit not only hotel operators and travel agencies but also restaurants, transportation, traders, and other SMEs. Additionally, Zuraidi suggested government support for large-scale events, including motorsport activities, to attract more visitors and stimulate economic growth on the island.

Furthermore, he called for Budget 2027 to consider the needs of Langkawi's fishing community by increasing aid for boat repairs and engine replacements. He stressed the importance of a needs-based approach to ensure that the budget allocation strengthens both the tourism sector and the overall economy of Langkawi.
