KLIA Terminal 1 Baggage System Enhancement Underway at International Reclaim Area

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has initiated a significant phase of the Baggage Handling System (BHS) replacement programme at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1. This phase focuses on upgrading the baggage reclaim carousels for international arriving passengers.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani announced the commencement of hoarding installation works at Carousel E to facilitate the replacement of its baggage reclaim belt. Similar enhancement works at Carousel F are scheduled to start on August 31. These two phases are projected to conclude by January 2027, after which the modernisation programme will proceed in stages at the remaining baggage reclaim carousels.

Datuk Mohd Izani emphasized that the BHS replacement programme is being executed in meticulously planned phases to ensure continuous operations at KLIA while modernizing essential airport infrastructure. He noted that each completed phase enhances the system's reliability, resilience, and capacity, thereby improving service for passengers and airline partners in the long term.

The phased approach will allow KLIA to maintain full operational capacity during the upgrades, with collaborative measures in place with airline and ground-handling partners to minimize disruptions throughout the enhancement works. Although passengers might encounter temporary congestion in the baggage reclaim hall, baggage delivery operations will proceed as usual.

The airport operator has also stated that four temporary baggage collection areas will be activated when necessary to manage baggage volumes and prevent overflow. Clear signage will direct passengers to the appropriate areas, and staff from baggage operations, ground handling, and customer experience teams will assist passengers in locating and collecting their baggage.

MAHB assured that safety remains a top priority throughout the modernisation programme, with all hoarding and construction activities conducted in full compliance with operational requirements to ensure the safety of passengers, airport personnel, and daily operations.
