KBS To Hold 2024 Paris Olympic Post-mortem On Nov 14.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS), through the National Sports Council (NSC), will conduct a post-mortem session on November 14 to evaluate the performance of national athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This initiative aims to facilitate detailed planning for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the session will involve representatives from the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), National Sports Associations (NSAs), team coaches, contingent secretariat, the National Sports Institute (NSI), and NSC. The Ministry of Finance (MOF), the Economy Ministry, local universities, and the media will also participate in the evaluation process. Hannah Yeoh, the Minister of Youth and Sports, addressed this during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat, responding to a query from Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor) regarding government measures to enhance athlete performance.

At the Paris Olympics, 15 athletes made their debut, providing new hope for Malaysia’s cont
ingent in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Highlights included weightlifter Aniq Kasdan, who set three national records, and badminton players Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who reached the semi-finals. Shuttler Lee Zii Jia also secured a bronze medal in the men’s singles event.

Hannah Yeoh commented on the Road to Gold (RTG) Project’s effectiveness, noting it spans two Olympic cycles, Paris 2024 and LA 2028. The RTG Committee has approved the RTG Fast Track Programme for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, selecting six young athletes under 25 from squash and diving. The number of participants is expected to grow with promising performances from young athletes in track cycling and archery, who rank among the world’s top 20.

The NSC plans to focus on emerging sports such as skateboarding, climbing, and surfing, deemed potential medal contributors. Additionally, sports offering multiple medals, weight categories, and those involving women athletes will receive increased attention.

This year, the ministry, through
the NSC, allocated approximately RM20.1 million for the RTG and Podium Programme to support athletes’ qualification and preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Specifically, RM13.2 million was spent on the RTG programme. The RTG’s financial accounts are currently under audit, with results to be disclosed at the Dewan Rakyat upon completion.
