KADA Farmers Suffer RM2.3 Million Loss Due to Monsoon Floods

Kuala lumpur: Farmers under the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (KADA) have reported losses exceeding RM2.3 million as a result of the recent northeast monsoon floods affecting the region. The devastation has impacted 269 farmers across Tumpat, Pasir Puteh, and Bachok, with 741.78 hectares of padi crops destroyed.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, KADA chairman Khalid Abdul Samad stated that the financial impact has been largely mitigated through the Padi Crop Takaful Scheme. This scheme has compensated over RM2.2 million to the affected farmers, thanks to a registration drive initiated last year. Farmers with crops affected for more than 76 days receive compensation at a rate of RM3,000 per hectare, with approvals expected within 30 to 60 days.

Khalid noted that approximately 90 percent of the 7,200 farmers under KADA have registered for the scheme, which is designed to offer financial protection in the event of natural disasters like floods. The government has allocated RM50 million to cover the scheme's premiums, requiring farmers to simply register to avail the benefits. Challenges with land documentation remain an issue for the remaining unregistered farmers.

Furthermore, Khalid mentioned that KADA has set aside RM700,000 for the cleaning and maintenance of 58 kilometers of drainage and irrigation systems under its jurisdiction. This measure is aimed at reducing the potential impact of future floods and minimizing crop damage. Meanwhile, the second-season padi planting commenced on December 1.

Khalid emphasized the importance of constructing dams to manage excess water during the rainy season and to provide resources during droughts, a responsibility that lies with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.
