JWP Accelerates Gazettement of Open Spaces and Flood Retention Ponds

Kuala lumpur: The Federal Territories Department (JWP) has announced plans to expedite the gazettement process for the remaining 30 percent of approved open spaces and flood retention ponds. This initiative aims to preserve these areas for the well-being of city residents.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh stated that this decision follows a briefing by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The briefing, led by MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman, focused on investigations into the alienation of flood retention ponds for development projects since 2021. The MACC found no evidence of corruption, misconduct, or abuse of power in the land alienation process and development orders issued by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

Hannah Yeoh noted that the commission thoroughly investigated the process through document reviews and witness statements, including input from the involved developers. Appointed surveyors confirmed that there was no boundary encroachment. The MACC emphasized the importance of considering the risks and functions of flood retention ponds in future development approvals, advocating for more stringent assessments.

Furthermore, the MACC acknowledged JWP's initiative to establish a special task force aimed at speeding up the gazettement of green areas and flood retention ponds. The commission also commended DBKL for halting all new planning and development approvals in the impacted areas immediately.

Hannah Yeoh highlighted that the consultation session with the MACC was the first of its kind organized by JWP, reflecting a commitment to strategic cooperation between the parties. This collaboration aims to strengthen governance for the benefit of the public.
