Johor Extends School Closures Due to Worsening Haze Conditions

Accra:Johor The Johor government has announced an extension of the closure of all schools and educational institutions in the state from October 12 to 16 due to deteriorating haze conditions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision was made following a decree by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, as air quality continues to worsen. Dr. Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali, chairman of the State Education and Information Committee, cited projected wind movements from Kalimantan, Indonesia, between October 13 and 15, as a contributing factor that could bring transboundary air pollution.

Dr. Naqib further explained that the persistence of haze is likely due to high concentrations of air pollutants and static atmospheric conditions, with Air Pollutant Index (API) readings reported between 170 and 180. The decision to extend the closures also considered health risks, particularly respiratory problems among children, students, and educators.

For schools with scheduled academic assessments or evaluations during this period, all activities will be postponed and rescheduled according to directives from the Johor State Education Department (JPNJ) and relevant authorities. Meanwhile, Home-based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) will continue where feasible to ensure the continuity of education.
