Kuala lumpur: Japan and Malaysia must work even more closely to elevate industrial cooperation, seize new opportunities, and build resilience in an uncertain global environment. Ambassador to Malaysia Noriyuki Shikata emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the two nations during his speech at the Japan-Malaysia Semiconductor Business Networking event, which was organized by the Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ambassador Shikata highlighted that the diplomatic relations between Japan and Malaysia are foundational to this collaboration. He noted that their partnership in the electrical and electronics sector stands out, with 1,400 projects and 280,000 jobs expected to be created for Malaysians by 2025. Shikata stressed that Japanese companies are not only investing but also nurturing local talent, strengthening supply chains, and enriching Malaysia's industrial ecosystem.
Shikata further mentioned the 'POWERR Asia' initiative announced by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, which recognizes semiconductors as essential components of a resilient and autonomous Asian supply chain. He underscored the growing importance of semiconductors to Asia and the world.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid remarked on the importance of partnerships in a fragmenting world. He highlighted Japan's unique position in the global supply chain, particularly in front-end equipment, materials, and precision components, making it a valuable partner for Malaysia's advancements in wafer fabrication and advanced packaging.
Sikh Shamsul emphasized that both governments are aligned in their efforts, with the political will to foster this cooperation. However, he noted the need for more projects, deals, and increased movement of people between the two countries to further solidify this partnership.
