Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today confirmed that the Cabinet has approved the new admission pathways for graduates from Chinese Private Secondary School (SMPC) or holders of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) into public universities: He said all students, regardless of their schooling stream, must meet the basic requirement of passing Bahasa Melayu and History subjects at the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) level.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Cabinet decision on SMPC/UEC includes the condition that students must pass Bahasa Melayu and History subjects in SPM. Anwar stated that they are providing these students with opportunities, potentially beginning with several courses, as this was not previously agreed upon. Now, with the acceptance of Chinese schools, the decision is viewed positively.
Anwar further clarified that this policy is not exclusive to SMPC/UEC students but also applies to those from Arabic schools, secondary religious schools, tahfiz institutions, and Malaysian students in international schools. The same conditions will apply across these educational backgrounds, although certain details are still under discussion, he mentioned after officiating the 2026 National Youth Day celebration.
The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) had announced that the government agreed on several decisions regarding entry pathways for students outside the national education system to study at Public Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA). These pathways will be merit-based, with calculations according to subject packages set by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and subject to the programme requirements established by universities.
