Hassan Faisal Expands Family’s Traditional Baulu Business

Kuala Pilah:Determined to preserve his family's heritage, Hassan Faisal Sayujan left a stable manufacturing job in Kuala Lumpur three years ago to fully dedicate himself to making traditional baulu using copper moulds.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, what began as a weekend project with his father-in-law, Iskandar Nor Baharom, in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, in 2018, has flourished into a business with a second outlet in Melaka and a third scheduled to open in Temerloh, Pahang, by the end of this month.

Hassan Faisal, 37, was inspired to revive the business, originally started by his grandparents in 1982, after discovering that the traditional baking equipment was still in good condition. The family initially made baulu using copper moulds and coconut husks, but had to pause operations due to his grandparents' age.

Now in its third generation, the business employs 14 workers and plans to further expand. Despite its growth, maintaining the traditional baking method poses challenges, as it requires skillful heat management using coconut husks and copper moulds.

The business benefits significantly from online marketing, with platforms like TikTok driving 60 to 70 percent of sales. The Melaka outlet produces at least 100 containers of baulu daily, with each priced between RM16 and RM18, depending on the flavor.
