No Witnesses or CCTV Evidence in Zara Qairina’s Case, Inquest Hears

Papar:The Coroner's Court was informed today by Investigating Officer Inspector Wong Yew Zhung that 200 witness statements were recorded to complete the sudden death report in the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the witnesses included family members, neighbors, school friends, teachers, medical officers, police officers, and students from the Rabiatul Adawiyah block girls' hostel at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar. Despite extensive efforts, it was found that no one had witnessed the incident that led to Zara Qairina being found unconscious near a drain at the hostel.

Inspector Wong noted that there were no patrols by security guards or wardens on the night of the incident, and no CCTV was installed in the hostel area that could have captured footage of the event. Additionally, there were no records of complaints about bullying involving Zara Qairina from her or her family.

The investigation included analyzing data from mobile phones seized during the probe, but no evidence was found that could clarify the circumstances of Zara Qairina's death. Wong's investigation encompassed witness testimonies, scene examinations, school and hostel management checks, document reviews, medical and post-mortem findings, and digital evidence analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the case.

Zara Qairina passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 17, 2025, a day after she was discovered unconscious at her school hostel. The inquest proceedings, led by Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan, are set to continue later today.
