Government Open to Refining BUDI Diesel Programme, Says Amir Hamzah

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Finance (MOF) is taking an open approach to considering any proposals to ensure that the BUDI MADANI Diesel (BUDI Diesel) programme runs smoothly. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said any decision regarding the programme, including the issue of increasing quotas, would be made based on actual usage data.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amir Hamzah explained that when the RON95 subsidy was first implemented, there were concerns about insufficient quotas. However, data from January to May this year showed that only 0.76 percent of users exceeded 200 litres. He emphasized the importance of allowing the system to operate and assessing its effectiveness before making any changes. If gaps are identified, the government is open to reviewing decisions.

The Finance Minister highlighted past experiences with targeted subsidy programmes, such as those for the e-hailing sector, as examples of the government's willingness to adjust based on actual usage data. He noted that the initial quotas for e-hailing were reviewed after feedback indicated they were insufficient. As a result, e-hailing drivers now have two quota levels-600 litres and 800 litres-based on their fuel consumption data.

Also present at the media briefing on the Implementation of Targeted Diesel Subsidy Reforms was Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
