Bangkok: The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening pondok (religious boarding school) institutions nationwide through a systematic and structured approach. This initiative aligns with the mandate set by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as stated by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the initiative has been rolled out in stages, collaborating with pondok institutions across the country to ensure its advantages reach students, teachers, and the broader community. Zulkifli emphasized the crucial role of pondok institutions or madrasahs in preserving the identity and intellectual tradition of Malay Muslims. They serve not only as educational centers but also as hubs for nurturing moral values and deepening religious understanding, while staying relevant to future challenges.
Pondok institutions have historically contributed significantly since the nation's early years of independence. Zulkifli expressed the government's intention for these institutions to continue progressing. Discussions with educators have shown a positive outlook, prompting the development of a more systematic framework. These comments were made during the convocation ceremony of Pondok Moden Tahfiz Saadah Addaarain in Teluk Panglima Garang.
As part of the long-term strategy to empower religious education institutions, the government has set up the Pondok Secretariat under the Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM). This body will coordinate the development of pondok institutions more systematically. The government will also evaluate various approaches to ensure that each initiative has a significant impact on both the institutions and the students and teachers who are integral to the Islamic education ecosystem.
Zulkifli stated the government's view of pondok institutions as vital components of community development, particularly in shaping identity and instilling noble values in the younger generation. YADIM has initiated several projects, including the Muzakarah Umara' dan Ulama' Pondok Kebangsaan (UMARA) 2025, which gathers scholars and leaders in places like Putrajaya, Kelantan, and Terengganu. Pondok institutions are recognized not only for their role in religious education but also for their substantial contribution to building the character and identity of the ummah.
