Accra:Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has announced the government's decision to create a Postal Fund, initially allocated RM150 million, aimed at bolstering postal services in rural, remote, and island areas. This initiative, set to begin in the first quarter of 2027, will be overseen by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and is intended to support the Universal Service Obligation (USO).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, The fund's framework follows the principles of the Universal Service Provision (USP) fund, tailored for telecommunications. While provisions for such a fund have been part of the Postal Services Act since 2012, it was not established until now, under the MADANI Government. The fund's scope will extend beyond traditional postal services to include the delivery of goods to remote locations, aiming to sustain the postal and courier ecosystem amidst technological and economic shifts.
Minister Fahmi emphasized the need for policy and operational adjustments to maintain industry competitiveness and protect workers' welfare. The MCMC has initiated dialogues with e-commerce providers, courier companies, and regulatory bodies like the Royal Malaysia Police and the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency to improve e-commerce service coordination and address related complaints.
In related news, an E-Commerce Bill will be introduced in Parliament to enhance platform accountability and protect local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from unfair competition, as announced by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the recent Budget 2027 presentation.
On a cultural note, Pos Malaysia, in collaboration with the MCMC and the Ministry of Communications, plans to issue a special stamp for Malaysia's 70th independence anniversary next year. Celebrating World Post Day, Pos Malaysia also launched a commemorative stamp and unveiled the country's first electric three-wheeled vehicle aimed at improving last-mile delivery efficiency.
