Accra:Global Peace Mission (GPM) Malaysia has proposed offering free training to participants in the Budi Belia programme. The training would cover first aid, disaster preparedness, and aid management to improve the effectiveness of volunteers.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, GPM's chief executive officer, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, suggested that the training be followed by placements with NGOs, tailored to participants' interests. This would include mentorship to help apply the acquired skills in community service.
GPM supports the Budi Belia programme, announced under Budget 2027, which provides a RM100 e-wallet incentive for young individuals who complete the required volunteer hours with selected NGOs. Ahmad Fahmi stated that GPM is prepared to collaborate on pilot projects focused on disaster preparedness and humanitarian services, with an initial evaluation period planned for three to six months.
Ahmad Fahmi also proposed allowing participants to voluntarily donate part of their incentive to community projects, with the potential for matching funds from the government or corporate sector to enhance the impact. He emphasized the need for transparency in selecting NGOs and the provision of resources to support training, supervision, and safety. A simple and verifiable system for confirming volunteer hours was also suggested.
Projects should be responsive to community needs and feedback, with supervision ensuring continued support. Ahmad Fahmi highlighted that participation from diverse racial, religious, and social backgrounds could foster trust and shared experiences in helping others.
